Chris Robinson

Chris Robinson is a UK-based freelance web designer and developer, and the founder of The Lonely Pixel. He has been designing and building websites professionally since 2013, working with clients across Hertfordshire, London, Essex and the wider UK.

His work centres on bespoke websites that are fast, accessible and sustainable — built to meet Core Web Vitals, usable by everyone, and designed to keep their energy footprint low.

Background

The experience, specialisms and approach behind the work.

Experience

Designing and building websites since 2013

Chris has worked in web design and development since 2013, with over 200 websites designed and launched. He works directly with clients as an independent freelancer, and as a delivery partner for agencies on a white-label basis.

He operates as a sole practitioner — the person you speak to is the person who designs and builds the site.

Specialisms

WordPress, Astro, accessibility & performance

  • WordPress development — bespoke themes, block editor work, and ongoing maintenance
  • Astro & modern static sites — fast, low-overhead builds for content-led sites
  • Sustainable web design — low-carbon websites on green hosting
  • Accessibility — building to WCAG standards as a default, not an add-on
  • Performance & SEO — Core Web Vitals, technical SEO, and site speed
  • eCommerce — online stores and payment integrations

Sustainability

Low-carbon web design as standard

The internet accounts for roughly 3–4% of global carbon emissions. Chris is a vocal advocate for reducing that footprint, and builds sites optimised for low energy use on green infrastructure where possible.

The Lonely Pixel runs on 100% renewable electricity, uses an electric vehicle for travel, and offsets remaining emissions through a dedicated tree grove. Read more about low-carbon web design.

Approach

Collaborative, honest, business-first

Chris works in a collaborative, open way: clients have a say throughout, and get an honest opinion on what will actually benefit their business rather than what is easiest to build.

Every project starts with the business problem rather than the visual design. The result is a site that looks considered and measurably does its job.

Clients

From startups to household names

Chris has delivered work for organisations including Westfield Group, Cosmo Restaurants, Hamilton Fraser Insurance, Video Arts, Zeti, Breakin' Convention and Moving Memory, alongside many small and medium-sized UK businesses.
